When the sun shines on a moisture-laden atmosphere, the sunlight is refracted and dispersed into its constituent colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. But why does this happen?
The key to understanding why rainbows form lies in the fact that water droplets act as tiny prisms. When white sunlight enters a water droplet, it is first refracted (or bent) as it passes through the surface of the droplet. Once inside the water droplet, the sunlight is then reflected off the back of the water droplet. As it exits the water droplet, sunlight is once again refracted. But this time, it is deflected at a different angle than when it first entered the drop. And this difference in angle is what causes light to separate into its constituent colors.

3. Take one of the flowers and glue it to the end of one of the white pipe cleaners. Repeat this step with the remaining flowers and white pipe cleaners.
4. For each rainbow flower, glue two leaves onto the stem on either side of the flower. 5. To finish off your smiley faces, glue a yellow button in the center of each flower and add two black beads or buttons for eyes.
